Honey Bear's Legacy - the beautiful Cat Beach Sanctuary in Penang, Malaysia

Copyright 2010, TF (teviothome@gmail.com)

RIP Miss Honey Bear - you are missed.
Thank you for the years of Love we shared.

Happy Spring 2022!

It's been more than a decade since I "blogged" regularly when living on Langkawi island in Malaysia. After several delightful years there, I took 8 cats on the ferry boat and moved to Penang island. Ten plus years of my life have been devoted to caring for cats and creating the Cat Beach Sanctuary. In 2022 I am back in Thailand and looking forward to returning to teaching - but in touch with Cat Beach every day.

It is because of a cat I named Honey Bear that my life took such a dramatic turn - and I joined the ranks of the "Crazy Cat Ladies." She recently passed away in my house in Batu Ferringhi, Penang, Malaysia - and like so many pluses and minuses these past two years of the pandemic have wrought, I could only watch her passing over the internet.

Please read her story here and please consider joining me in supporting Cat Beach.

Please read and share the story of Honey Bear's Legacy - the beautiful beachside No-Kill Non-profit home for cats - Cat Beach Sanctuary. Let's help Cat Beach help cats!

Awakening to the sounds of birds and the sea

Waking Up at The Ocean Residence, Langkawi Island, Malaysia
What is it like to wake up at The Ocean Residence?
Sometimes it’s the sounds of birds that wake me or the morning sunlight streaming in through a crack in the curtain. Other times, if there’s an onshore wind, I might hear the roll and toss of the tide coming or going from the shore.
Occasionally, I hear voices – the friendly chatter of Langkawi’s fishermen as they prepare their nets for the day or launch their small boats. If I wake early enough to catch the dawn sun rising over the oh-so-green islands across the way, it’s so quiet and still that I can hear the waves lapping gently
I head back to the kitchen, grateful that the housekeepers have provided all that I need for a good strong morning cuppa. With laptop or tablet in one hand and my coffee cup in the other, I head out to the veranda to enjoy the dawning of a new day in this extraordinary place.

Surely this has to be one of the world’s most beautiful morning scenes. What’s it like? It’s magical!
Everyone needs a little romance in their lives. For me, life on Langkawi island off the northern Malaysia / Thailand border was a romantic sojourn - in many ways, a retreat from the world. I lived several lovely places on the island over a period of 3 years or so but the last - and certainly not least! - was at my client's, Paul Penders, property. I had an amazing room on the 2nd floor of "The Container House," an exceptional building constructed from 17 shipping containers. My room was lined with red brick and closely resembled friends' apartments where I've stayed in New York City! Since I left, that room has been refurbished with a kitchen added -- and I'll hope to go back and visit again one day. It was the ultimate 'getaway.'

Langkawi Life

Thanks for stopping by! Writing a lot these days -- and realized I missed posting in February entirely!

Cats-cats-cats are dominating my life these days. I was given two kittens last June -- Pebbles and BammBamm. Since moving to Cenang beach, a stray has moved in whose name has gravitated from the simple "Gray Kitty" to "Grady." Now I'm feeding about 10 strays. And my friend who has Pebbles and BammBamm's black tuxedoed brother, Lucky, has left him with me while she's away. So that's 4 indoor cats and at least 8 outdoors cats. And me -- trying to keep the peace...

Will be uploading my "Langkawi Life" essays soon but in the meantime, go straight to the Langkawi Gazette to read the monthly column which started in Sept 2011:

Am also writing Lesson Plans for an ESP (English for Special Purposes) course for Ally Int'l in Brazil, continuing to work on two e-books due to be done asap, and the ongoing project of a biography of my amazing father, Dr. Walter A. Fairservis, Jr. (see the Facebook memorial page about him).

More soon. I promise!
